Among the diverse forms of decorative and applied arts of Uzbekistan the most developed and rich art is carpet-weaving. The origin of carpet-weaving dates back to the III-II century B.C. The tradition of carpet-weaving in Bukhara was passed down from generation to generation and has been improved and perfected through centuries. The need to carpets was defined by nomadic way of life in Central Asia. They were used not only for sitting or as furniture, but also for decoration. Carpets were very popular in everyday life of Uzbeks, Tajiks, Jewish, Turkmen, Kazakhs, Kirghiz, Central Asian Arabs and Uigurs.

There are different types of carpets: with low nap, with high nap – “julkhirs”, “kolims” and so on.

The yarn camel’s wool or sheep’s wool – was dyed with natural dyes. The range of colors was very diverse: bright red, dark-brown, green, yellow-golden, pink, blue and white. The ornamentation is mostly geometric, floral and faunal.
